Myanmar Admin Structure and Change Reports

As of December 2019, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar is constituted of 14 States and Regions plus 1 Union Territory, 75 districts, 330 townships, 469 towns, 3470 Wards, 13,590 village tracts and 63,214 villages. In line with the Constitution (2008), there are also 6 Self-Administered Zones/Divisions which include 18 of the 330 townships across the country. There are some differences in the administrative definitions of townships, towns, village tracts and villages, between the Government and Self-administered Zones/Divisions.

MIMU is actively working with field partners to track the changes at the village level to improve the coverage of Pcodes, hence allowing humanitarian and development partners to reach the vulnerable population in hard-to-reach areas. As of Jan 2026, 4 rounds of Pcodes updates since 2021 have brought the total number of villages in the MIMU database to 66,659. Of these, 81.9% (54,604 villages) have recorded coordinates, allowing them to be mapped for humanitarian and development activities. Our quest must continue to locate the coordinates of the remaining 12,000+ villages, many of which are in Kachin and Shan States.
